SIMplifica won't work from abroad?

Since 2026 every official PR trail needs a booking through the government's SIMplifica portal — and that portal is the single biggest headache for visitors trying to plan from home.

The two-line fix: if the site won't take your phone number, register with your email instead — a foreign number isn't needed. If the site won't load at all, disable any VPN and try mobile data; if it still traps you, book once you land (it's reliable from a local connection) or have an operator hold your slot.

What actually goes wrong — and the workaround

Site won't load / traps you on page one Access

SIMplifica is sometimes unreachable from outside Portugal — it loads the first screen then goes nowhere. Turn off any VPN (a foreign exit node can make it worse), try a different browser, or switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data. If it still won't complete, don't waste an evening on it: it works normally once you're on the island, or an operator can book for you.

"Invalid phone number" at sign-up Registration

The portal frequently rejects non-Portuguese mobile numbers. Choose the email registration path instead of the phone one. Account type is "Pessoa Singular" (individual). Your password needs at least 10 characters using 3 of 4 types (upper, lower, number, symbol) — the "suggest strong password" button saves the hassle.

Payment won't go through Checkout

Pay by credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard) — that's the route that works for visitors. MB WAY and "ATM reference" are for Portuguese bank accounts, so skip them. Your ticket and QR code arrive by email, not SMS.

Book before you fly — the calm version

  1. Create the account this week, from home, on the SIMplifica booking page — not on hike morning at the trailhead with no signal.
  2. Book the exact date and 30-minute entry slot. Popular trails (PR1, PR6 25 Fontes, PR9 Caldeirão Verde) sell out weeks ahead in summer and around Christmas.
  3. Screenshot the QR ticket. Rangers check it at the trailhead, and there's often no signal to reload your email.
  4. Everyone in the group goes on the booking — including under-12s (free) and residents (free) — or the whole reservation can be refused.
Hiking an official PR trail without a valid booking is an infraction, with fines reported up to €250. Same-day slots are possible if any remain, but a fixed travel date is a bad time to gamble on it.
